A beautifully tailored curtain can lose its finished look with even a small amount of length loss. So, can curtains shrink? Yes – and it can happen during cleaning, from exposure to moisture or heat, or when the face fabric and lining respond differently. Can Curtains Shrink During Cleaning?

Curtains can shrink when fibers relax, swell, or contract in response to water, heat, agitation, or drying. Natural fibers are generally more vulnerable than synthetics, but construction matters just as much as fiber type. A lined linen panel, for example, may be more unpredictable than an unlined polyester curtain, even when both appear durable at first glance.

Shrinkage can also be uneven. One edge may draw up more than another, hems can ripple, and headings may no longer sit evenly on the rod.
